A Moment With Megan Watson (BadAss Triathlete)

Meet Megan Watson! She's an age group world champ in Triathlon, a former medic in the New Zealand Army, and studying for her Nursing Degree. We caught up with Megan to ask her a couple of questions: CWRB: When did you first start cycling? MW: I started cycling when I was about 11 years old, my aunt took me to a ‘bloke free’ or womens only triathlon, she had to get a specific waiver to say I could race as you had to be 13 or have a guardian race with you as the bike leg was on open roads.
After I placed well (in 4th overall), Dad bought me a proper road bike.
From there I followed in my older sisters footsteps and started racing at Ramblers Cycling Club in Hawkes Bay most Saturday afternoons. I raced in the F grade which was the lowest at the time and got a lot of help from some of the older men who used to race NZ pro in their prime and who were then retired. Racing for Rambler - it seemed to make sense as we were going out and watching Dad race every week anyway. CWRB: Favourite place you have travelled? MW: I really enjoy travelling so it would be difficult to decide on a single place! Vietnam and Peru are definitely standouts! Its amazing to see the different cultures. CWRB: Favourite place you have ridden? MW: I loved riding in the Netherlands. The cycle culture is incredible, the drivers are all so considerate and their cycle lanes are next level. I also could not believe how many people were out on their bikes – in any weather and in any clothing. CWRB: Who inspires you and why? MW: Again there are so many but I’m definitely inspired by top-performing women athletes, the likes of Gwen Jorgenson and Flora Duffy – their passion and commitment in triathlon is incredible yet they are just as fierce competitors in other sports. CWRB: What is your top riding tip?
MW: Find people to ride with, the kms/miles fly by when you are doing it with others, but remember to go out on solo rides for your own mental resilience from time to time.
CWRB: What is your favourite piece of cycling kit? MW: I love my Oakley radar sunglasses, perfect in any weather and never fog or fall off. Do they count? OR a good pair of bib shorts – l’ll never ride in regular shorts again. CWRB: Favourite way to cross train for cycling? MW: I’m a triathlete so all my training is technically cross -training! I do like getting in the gym from time-to -time to strengthen some weak points that you can’t train from swimming or running, or I like to get out for a hilly adventurous walk that really fires up the quad muscles. Good luck with your training Megan! We look forward to watching your achievements in the future.
